When in New Orleans
I had been wanting to travel to New Orleans for the LONGEST TIME and we were finally able to make it happen!!
Of course, I traveled with my sister and our two travel buddies POST-Mardi Gras… Would that technically count as Mardi Gras? Close enough, right?
First things first! BEIGNETS!
EVERYONE, I mean everyone recommended Cafe Du Monde and honestly, it didn’t meet the hype expectation for me. The lines were so long, there was barely any seating especially since it was only outdoors and they only accepted cash. So it made it a little difficult to accommodate to. And because it’s SO well-known now, it’s become a little more expensive.
What I would recommend is Morning Call! I thought the service was great and there is seating. What I loved most was that they pulled the beignets straight out of the oven. Once we received them, they were nice and warm. They’re both open 24 hours!
Post-Mardi Gras
There was so much to explore and so little time. Although, we traveled from Thursday night to Monday morning for post-Mardi Gras, I feel like we needed more time. We looked at some interesting parts of New Orleans but it’s what makes it a fun, lively city!
We visited the Oak Alley Plantation by car because uber is currently not available. The plantation is HUGE and there’s so much to see. I absolutely love looking at architecture and the impact nature has.
It tells its story of a plantation through its evolution. It’s amazing how a garden from the 1920’s preserves the remains of a kitchen hidden under turf from the 1830’s. There’s also focus on slavery- based on their living conditions and their way of life. The big house, a theatre, the blacksmith shop and the civil war tent. I thought the slavery portion was very impactful because you can place yourself in the era and story of what happened then.
To end the night, we went through Bourbon Street for a very recommended beverage- the hand grenade at Tropical Isle. It was the tastiest, most deadly frozen drink! But very worth it!!
Tips for your trip:
- Bring cash! Some places only accept that versus a credit or debit card.
- Plan your transportation well. Uber/Lyft (etc) isn’t accepted everywhere, so it’s best to have a plan b.
